well, we’re headed to the english countryside today, friends. we’re visiting osip, a small farm-to-table restaurant in Somerset, a rural county of beautiful rolling hills in South West England. sounds cozy, right? it looks it too — osip works with a group of local farmers, growers, hunters and gatherers to put together daily changing menus that reflect the very best of Somerset and its countryside roots at any given moment and have also been given some orchards and a beautiful plot of land which, come this summer will hopefully provide much in the way of vegetables, herbs and fruit for their charming little dining room, where they serve a prix-fix 6-course menu. it’s still chilly in merry olde england, so we’re layering up today in an ensemble suitable for the country, but with a bit of an edge — a warm leather jacket, cozy wraparound shrug, a modern peasant blouse in a liberty print, slim black denim and chelsea boots. add a cashmere beanie and we’re good to go. an appropriate pre-or-post dinner read might be The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by erik larson — which shows, in cinematic detail, how winston Churchill taught the British people “the art of being fearless” during the terror of Britain’s WWII blitz. mister larson is probably my very favorite writer (i’ve read every one of his books) and i love how he shares fascinating details of history and weaves in just enough juicy behind the scenes gossip to teach without being the least bit dull.
